The National Sport Museum is a place dedicated to the conservation, diffusion and showcasing of France's sporting heritage. It has one of the world's largest collections on the theme of sport at its disposal, consisting of over 100,000 items, objects and documents.
Its opening at Allianz Riviera took place on June 27th 2014.
A public administration establishment, the aim of the National Sport Museum is :
- The study of sporting achievements and their related heritage, and their presentation to the public.
- The conservation, protection and restoration, on behalf of the State, of the cultural assets listed in its inventories.
- The enrichment of national collections through the acquisition of cultural assets, on behalf of the State.
- The preparation and implementation of educational and diffusion activities intended to ensure equal access for all to the world of sport and its related heritage.
- A contribution to the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and research on sporting achievements.
The National Sport Museum carries out its assignments all over the national territory and co-operates with foreign organizations pursuing the same goals.
About the National Sport Museum
In 1963, Maurice Herzog, then Secretary of State for Youth and Sport, created a Sport Museum within the Ministry. From 1988 to 1997, the Sport Museum's national exhibition galleries opened their doors at the Parc des Princes. From 1997 to 2008, the Museum presented its collections in exhibitions "outside its walls", exhibitions accompanied by a significant production of editorial material. In June 2008, exhibition space called "Le Sport s'expose" was created in premises of about 750 sq. metres in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. From 2008 to 2011, the National Sport Museum held several temporary exhibits in Paris, but also in Monaco and Nice… Henceforth, Allianz Riviera is providing the Museum with a permanent home.
